Tres Rios Habitat for Humanity volunteers recently repaired and restored the home of long-time Aztec resident, Josephine. For some time, Josephine has been fighting cancer and recently had two strokes. It's been hard for her to stay hopeful, but she has managed to "keep hope alive" and to be thankful for each day she is given.
While Josephine was in the hospital in Albuquerque, vandals broke into her home, stole household items, and damaged her property. Afterwards, mice got into her home and caused even further damage.
Our amazing volunteers visited her home three times. First, they rebuilt her front stairs so she could have safe access into her home. Then, they came back to yard maintenance and clean-up. Lastly, they removed the destroyed carpet and painted her floors so she had a safe and sanitary place to live.
Josephine has lived in Aztec for 19 years during which she worked as a family counselor. She treated both adults and children, but most of her work focused on children who had been traumatized. She has given so much to our community, and we are so pleased to be able to help her now.
We are happy to report that Josephine's current cancer treatments are going well. She also is walking better, speaking more clearly, and even reading and writing again after her strokes.
