Local Woman Donates Lot in Bloomfield to Habitat for Humanity
February 2020: Local woman, Dorothy Nobis, paved the way for a family to get a new home when she donated her property in Bloomfield to the local Habitat for Humanity.
When asked what motivated her to donate the lot, Nobis said, "I bought my first home after a difficult time in my life, and the pride of ownership and the love I have of my little piece of heaven is something I think everyone should have."
"Because I know how wonderful it is to come home to a home you own, I am thrilled beyond measure to help a family enjoy the blessing of home ownership. Home is where the heart is -- it is where love lives, memories are made, families connect and friends enjoy", she continued.
The property was a gift to Dorothy and she wanted to pay it forward. Habitat for Humanity will build a home on the lot for a low income family who would not otherwise be able to afford their own home. The homes are built by volunteers who work side-by-side with a family in need.
Once the home is built, the chosen family will pay a no interest mortgage making the home affordable to them. The property is a very nice corner lot with utilities available in the street which make the building process easier. No dates have been chosen to start building a home on the lot.
Nobis has lived in San Juan County since 1984. Over the years she has served on many boards and often volunteers. Nobis said, "I'm a believer in giving back to my community... and do what I can to work with others to keep our community the best place to raise a family.."
The desire to help others has been a life-long pursuit for Nobis. In this case, she chose to donate to Habitat for Humanity because of Former President Jimmie Carter whose work with Habitat for Humanity has often brought the organization into the limelight. "Because of all he [President Carter] has done to help others achieve their dream of having their own home, I have been inspired to help as well," she said.
Nobis is known to volunteer as often as she can and sees volunteering as a gift she gives herself. She volunteered with the San Juan County Fair for more than 20 years. When people ask why she does so much volunteering, her answer always is "Why don't YOU?"
